about

A live cover of I Was Young When I Left Home by Bob Dylan, recorded at The Preservation Room.

This song really resonates for us, especially in these volatile, troubled times when so many people are far from home, unable to see their families and loved ones. It’s a strange moment when we can’t go home, and we can’t travel either. Dylan based it on 900 Miles, a railroad blues folk song about running away from home, the youthful desire for wildness and independence, and the sense of horror when you suddenly realise there’s no going back. Suddenly you realise what you’re missing, you’ve taken things for granted for too long.

The people you’re running from are gone forever, and you never even wrote them a letter. Dylan’s version of this song is all about regret, hindsight, and the pain of losing a part of yourself – you’ve spent all this time away, endless travelling, working, partying, and you have nothing to show for it, not a penny to your name. It’s easy to mistake a lack of connection – no responsibilities, no attachments – for freedom.
