‘This Is Broken Folk’ collects seven broadside ballads from Britain, Ireland and Australia, a Cossack folk song translated from Russian, and one original. While the material is traditional, the themes of institutional violence, forced migration and personal hardship that echo through the songs are strikingly contemporary. The overall feel is of defiant, transnational protest laced with dark humour – an urgent political necessity in Brexit Britain.

Located in the brick viaduct arches underneath Ramsgate’s Royal Parade, Arco Barco studios was chosen for its natural reverb. Sounds of boats, gulls and the sea recorded through the studio’s open doors made it onto one of the tracks – Jim Jones – which also features trans singer Clair Le Couteur’s eerie overtone abilities and ex-Stomp member Carli Jefferson’s eclectic percussion setup. Jefferson’s signature body drumming and tap dance style are showcased in Irish-Australian ballads The Catalpa and Jack Donahue.
